Small-batch · handmade · imperfect on purpose

Not every loaf
is perfect.
That's the
whole point.

The Ugly Duckling Bakery is a one-baker, one-oven kind of place — sourdough, focaccia, butters and cookies that taste like home, not a magazine cover.

Our story

There's beauty
in the imperfect.

Not every cookie is perfectly round. Not every cake is Instagram-ready. And that's exactly how we like it.

UDB was born out of a simple belief: lopsided pies, overfilled cupcakes and cracked brownies are the bakes that remind you of home — of heart, of honesty, of someone making something for you with their hands.

Each loaf, cookie, and cake we make is slightly different from the last, just like people. That's the beauty of it. You don't need to be perfect to be worth celebrating.

Come as you are. Stay for something sweet.

— Emily, baker & law student

01

Made one batch at a time

One baker, one oven, one weekend. Quantities are honest because the kitchen is tiny.

02

Real ingredients, no shortcuts

Stone-ground flour, cultured butter, slow ferments. If a loaf takes 36 hours, it takes 36 hours.

03

A community, not a brand

UDB is a third space — somewhere to unwind, gather with friends, or just take home a warm bag.

Quick questions

Things people
often ask.

Can't find what you're looking for? Tap "give me bread" and just write Emily a note — she answers everything herself.

How does ordering work?

Right now UDB is invite-and-pickup. You drop your name and what you're craving on the interest list, and Emily reaches out the week she's baking your item to confirm pickup time and address.

How far in advance should I order?

Sourdough and focaccia: a week ahead is safe. Cookies and butters: two or three days. Special-occasion bakes (birthdays, parties): give Emily two weeks if you can.

Is everything baked the day of pickup?

Loaves and focaccia, yes — same morning. Butters are cultured a few days ahead. Cookies are baked-to-order in small trays so they show up still a little warm if you're nearby.

Do you ship?

Not yet. Bread doesn't love a long journey, and we'd rather hand it to you. Local pickup only for now.

Can you do gluten-free or vegan?

Some items, sometimes. Mention it in your interest note and Emily will let you know what she can do for that batch.

Why "ugly"?

Because the lopsided ones taste exactly the same — and because real food, made by a real person, doesn't always look like a render. We lean in.

The end of the funnel

Give me
bread.

Drop your name and what you're craving. Emily gets back to everyone personally — usually within a day, between contracts class and the next loaf.
